In 2000, Paul Alt was invited by the Columbia School of Social Work to Bronx CIS 82 to develop a Urban Ecology Sanctuary similar to the design for DuSable High School. Along with faculty members, Paul Alt conducted focus groups with 10 classes, 240 students and their teachers, where students wrote essays identifying issues and opportunities affecting their lives. The focus groups revealed their personal experiences with environment in their school and neighborhoods in which they lived. From the students input, a design was developed for a sanctuary project for the school’s side yard.
